How to care for your handloom saree

A handloom saree is more than something you wear. It carries the character of the hands that made it—the weave, the texture, the tiny variations that make each saree its own.
And with the right care, a good handloom saree can stay beautiful for years, even become something you pass down.
The good news? Handloom sarees don't need complicated care. They simply need thoughtful care.
1. Always check the fabric first
Not every handloom saree should be cared for in exactly the same way.
Cotton, silk, linen, mulmul and blended handlooms can respond differently to washing, moisture and heat.
Before cleaning your saree, check its fabric, colour and care instructions. When in doubt—especially with silk, zari or delicate weaves—professional dry cleaning is the safer choice.
2. Don't wash after every wear
One of the easiest ways to extend the life of your saree is simply to wash it less often.
If you've worn it for a few hours and it isn't visibly soiled, air it out before putting it away.
Hang it in a shaded, well-ventilated place for a while and let any moisture or body odour dissipate naturally.
Avoid leaving it crumpled in your wardrobe or laundry basket.
3. Wash gently
For washable cotton and other suitable handloom sarees:
- Use cold or cool water.
- Choose a mild detergent.
- Don't soak the saree for long periods.
- Avoid vigorous rubbing, particularly around the border and pallu.
- Don't wring or twist the fabric.
- Wash dark and light-coloured sarees separately.

6. Dry it away from harsh sunlight

Harsh, prolonged sunlight isn't.
Direct sunlight can gradually fade colours, particularly deeper or naturally dyed shades.

in shade + in good airflow + away from harsh midday sun.
And don't leave it hanging outside for hours after it has already dried.
7. Iron on the right setting
Too much heat can damage delicate fabrics and affect the finish of a saree.
Use the lowest appropriate heat setting for the fabric and avoid pressing the iron repeatedly over delicate embellishments, zari or textured areas.
For particularly delicate sarees, place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree.
And always check the fabric-specific care recommendation first.
8. Store handloom sarees properly
This is where long-term saree care really matters.
Before putting your saree away, make sure it is completely dry.
Then fold it loosely and store it in a clean, dry wardrobe.
For delicate sarees, wrapping them in a soft, breathable cotton or muslin cloth can help protect them from dust while allowing the fabric to breathe.
Avoid storing handloom sarees in damp or poorly ventilated spaces.
9. Refold them from time to time
Here's a simple habit many saree lovers swear by:
Don't keep your sarees folded in exactly the same way for months or years.
Every few months, take them out, air them gently and refold them so that the same creases aren't sitting in exactly the same places indefinitely.
This is particularly helpful for delicate fabrics and zari work.
10. Give zari and embellishments extra care
If your saree has zari, embroidery, sequins or other embellishments, treat it more delicately.
Avoid:
- rough surfaces
- unnecessary rubbing
- harsh detergents
- high heat
- prolonged exposure to moisture
When storing, you can place a layer of soft, acid-free tissue or clean muslin around particularly delicate areas to reduce friction.
11. Protect your sarees from moisture
Humidity is one of the quiet enemies of textile storage.
Never put a saree away while it is damp—even if the moisture is only from a humid day or perspiration after wearing it.
If your wardrobe tends to get humid, periodically air your sarees out.
You can also use suitable wardrobe moisture absorbers, but don't place anything that can leak or come into direct contact with the fabric.
12. Don't use perfume directly on the saree
A small habit that can make a difference:
Apply perfume before draping your saree, not onto the fabric itself.
Perfume and deodorant formulations can contain alcohols and oils that may stain or affect delicate fabrics over time.
Let your fragrance dry on your skin before wearing your saree.
13. For stains, act quickly—but don't panic
If you spill something on your saree, resist the temptation to scrub it immediately.

- Gently blot the area.
- Don't rub the stain deeper into the weave.
- Avoid applying random stain removers.
